R4W builds water well in Ndera

Report on successful well at Ndera
Nearest water source in Ndera

On the 21st of June, R4W team started drilling a well in Ndera Sector in the outskirts of Kigali, Rwanda. We chose Gishuri village mainly because the people in the village walked about an hour each day to get access to some water pond which provided dirty water that was unfit for domestic use (Picture of source is on left). This served as a daily inspiration in our work as we saw the dirty water that the people had to drink everyday

We started work and within 2 days we had hit water at 8m. We continued drilling till we reached the water base at 13m. The drilling took five days, and we proceeded with the water flushing process that took us three days. Flushing is removal of the dirty water that comes in after installing the pipe and filter into the well.

After that we installed the pump at 11m and the taps on top. We then pumped for 2 days to remove the dirty water that had gone in due to the drilling. We then built around the well to secure the pump and aid easy access to water for the villages. The entire process took about 10 days. This well will provide water to an estimated 700 families in the area.

In this video, Yves (R4W team) does a little explaining on the ongoing work at the Ndera site

At the drilling site we had a team of 8 people: Patrick Hafashimana, Yves Iradukunda, Timothy Kaboya, Janvier Faradja, Raphael Gatabazi, Feli Yusufu, Damien Ntihinyurwa.
Here is part of the team at the well a day before completion

As of today, the well is complete but is yet to be opened since we await the water testing results from the water regulatory authority in Rwanda. This should be out very soon and we will officially open the well for use by the village.

Here is a video of R4W team on site when they had just got the clean water.

All in all, the Ndera well is a testimony to what we all can do if we choose to make a difference in the lives of others. There is a water crisis in some parts of Rwanda and we can all do something about it. There is people who live in dire conditions and the least we can do is lend a helping hand.

Thank You
Tim Kaboya, R4W Team

Water Scarcity, Eastern Province

water paddle in Gatsibo, Eatern ProvinceWater Crisis in Kiramuruzi, Eastern Province, Rwanda

Kiramuruzi is a sector in the District of Gatsibo, in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. It has a population of 6000 people. The R4W team worked in this region for almost three months last summer, and was able to complete one well in that area. As we were building this well in Kiramuruzi, we were able to see with our own eyes the severity of clean water shortage in this area. Though its population gets water from three main sources including water taps, water wells, and water ponds, these water sources do not provide enough water to satisfy the population.

The water taps in Kiramuruzi were built by the Rwandan national water and energy supplier currently known as Energy, Water, and Sanitation Authority (EWASA). The number of this water taps is small compared to the number of people who use them. They are also separated by a large distance (approximately 3 miles), and the water flow is small because this water is shared among several sectors. According to Aloys Zunguzungu, the President of R4W and one of the R4W members who got to stay in Kiramuruzi last summer, a person can go to fetch water at one of those water taps at 8am and get the water at 12pm because of the long line of people waiting, and the small flow of water.

The other source of clean water for the population of Kiramuruzi is water wells. Around 32 water wells were built in this sector by different organization including Living Water International. When we got there, only three of those water wells were still functional. Vedaste Niyonsaba, the R4W Vice-President of Technology and also one of the people who spent a lot of time in Kiramuruzi last summer, says that this is due to the lack of maintenance and the misuse of these wells. Some of the wells’ materials were stolen by the local population, and when a well is broken there is usually no one to fix it. Aloys Zunguzungu also says this is due to the fact that no one takes charge of these wells, and that the population does not take ownership of these wells. By not taking ownership of these wells, the local population does not take good care of them.

When there is no hope of getting clean water from the water taps or water wells, the Kiramuruzi population turns to water ponds. These water ponds are collections of rain water in large holes. The water from these ponds is extremely unclean since it is not covered and does not go through any kind of filtration system. This water gets mixed with dust and waist. Aloys Zunguzungu said that he saw once a person fetching water to cook from one of those ponds, while another person was cleaning his bike in the same pond. Some pictures shown below show young kids fetching water while cows are also drinking water from there. To put it quite simply, the water used is very unsafe for any domestic use.

Thus, the water shortage condition in the sector of Kiramuruzi is grave. The people in Kiramuruzi can get water from water taps, water wells or water ponds. The water taps give clean water but they are so few that they cannot provide enough water for the 6000 people living in Kiramuruzi. While many water wells were built in this region, only three of them can still provide water, and this is due to the misuse and the lack of maintenance of those water wells. The population of Kiramuruzi also gets water from water ponds even though they are a source of unclean water. This water does not go through any sort of filtration, and thus is so dangerous to the population. This same water causes all kinds of preventable diseases to the local population. The infant mortality rate is high and many kids suffer from preventable diseases

Third Well Completed with Success!

The water well that people used before in GatsiboI was blessed by waking up to a call from Macelin who works in the water testing lab for the former Electrogas, now called RECO-RWASCO (Water and Energy Company in Rwanda).  He told me that the water he tested was good for people to consume. That is the water from the third well we drilled in Eastern Province. The well will serve 500 people in nearby families, the local leader told us. We worked with a group of 4 local people that we trained, and they told us it is a very easy technology that they can use by themselves. Now we are planning on an official open of the well and its maintainance.

We are now working on the fourth well in Gasabo-Ndera (1 hour drive from Kigali downtown) and the well is soon to be completed. We have with us Caleb Holsey ( Water4 Foundation Project Manager).

He is in the team that trained us, and is now working with us in Rwanda. He’s been a great blessing to us as we try to reach our goals.

Vedaste demonstating the drilling equipment Thursday June 10,  we, the Rwandans4Water team from OC ( Oklahoma Christian University), are doing a demonstration of the hand drilling technology at KIST ( Kigali Institute of Science and Technology). We has been trained in this technology by Water4 foundation, and we are currently using it to drill wells in Rwanda. Our hope is that this project can be sustained by the engineering students at KIST even after we go back to Oklahoma. This event will be at 2:30pm and is open to everyone who wishes to know more about Rwandans4Water. We hope you will be able to join us.
